Umatilla National Forest July 26 Fire Update

Multiple fire related area closures are in effect for the Umatilla National Forest including areas on the Heppner, North Fork John Day, and Pomeroy Ranger District. Closure descriptions and maps are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/umatilla/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5286768.

Fire update

Double Snag Fire is currently 131 acres and 10% contained. It is located approximately 1½ mile northwest of Winom Campground, on the north side of Forest Road 52. The Northeast Oregon Type 3 Incident Management team is in command of this fire. A total of 112 personnel comprised of four hand crews, two falling modules, two engines, heavy equipment including two feller bunchers, six masticators, one support truck and one dozer plus operators will be on the fire line today. Fire line medics and an ambulance are on site to provide support if needed.

Yesterday, crews completed the primary containment line, and a recon flight was conducted over the fire which allowed fire personnel to better map the fire and plan for the next operational period.

Conditions permitting,  firing operations will start along the west side of the fire to remove fuels between the containment line and the fires edge. Crews will continue prep work along the north side of Forest Road 52 and will do prep work around the Pearson Cabins, removing fuels adjacent to these structures. Helicopter support available today and forest management will be looking for additional air support.

Weather: Today, mostly sunny with decreased winds and mostly clear evening. Hazy and areas of smoke.

In addition, the following incidents are burning on or near the Umatilla National Forest and are being managed by partner agencies and Complex Incident Management Teams.
