Skull Fire Update
PENDLETON, Ore. (July 5, 2024)
— An estimated 60 firefighting personnel continued suppression and
containment efforts on Skull Fire throughout the night. The wildfire is
located approximately five miles southeast of Ukiah, OR near the Drift Fence
Campground on the North Fork John Day Ranger District.
Currently, the fire is holding at approximately 64 acres in size
with 80 percent containment. There are no road closures or evacuations at this
time. The updated acreage information is from improved information. The cause
of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
Efforts are ongoing to monitor and suppress the fire.
The Umatilla National Forest is very appreciative of the
numerous resources from the Oregon Department of Forestry that assisted in the
initial attack efforts.
As of now there are five engines, two water tenders, one helicopter,
four rappellers, two crews and a type three incident management team currently
overseeing fire suppression efforts. Fire managers will continually assess
resource needs based on fire spread and behavior.
Hot and dry conditions are expected to persist throughout the
weekend. Officials want to remind everyone that while the current fire danger
rating remains at LOW for
Umatilla National Forest, this weekend is
expected to be extremely hot and dry with conditions spanning through Saturday
and Sunday.
