Umatilla National Forest July 23 Fire Update

 

Multiple fire related area closures are in effect for the Umatilla National Forest including areas on the Heppner, North Fork John Day, and Pomeroy Ranger District. Closure descriptions and maps are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/umatilla/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5286768.

Pomeroy Ranger District: Due to fire growth, extreme fire behavior, unfavorable weather conditions, and concern for public and fire fighter safety, forest officials on the Umatilla National Forest are expanding the temporary closure area related to the Cougar Creek Fire. Fire update

[3:00 p.m.] Double Snag Fire is currently 98 acres and 0% contained. It is located approximately 1½ mile northwest of Winom Campground, on the north side of Forest Road 52. The Northeast Oregon Type 3 Incident Management team is in command of this fire. Today crews will clear brush, grass and other fuels along Forest Road 52, preparing it as the primary containment line on the south edge of the fire. Heavy equipment will work to construct dozer and mastication line around the perimeter away from the road. Four hand crews, heavy equipment including 2 buncher fellers, 5 masticators and 1 dozer plus operators will be on the fire line today. Crews will also be evaluating values at risk and taking necessary actions to protect them.

Weather: Cooler temperatures are expected today with temperature forecast to be 86-95° and humidity 11-17%. Wind northwest 1-5 mph.

In addition, the following incidents are burning on or near the Umatilla National Forest and are being managed by partner agencies and Complex Incident Management Teams.
