North Fork John Day Temporary Forest Closure due to Fires

 

Forest officials are temporarily closing some of the lands, trails and roads in North Fork John Day Ranger District to ensure public safety. This temporary closure will also ensure the safety of firefighters engaged in operations to suppress the Battle Mountain Complex, Upper Winom, Double Snag, Big Creek, and Monkey Creek Fire. Check the maps below to see the temporarily closed areas.

The Battle Mountain Complex currently consists of the 930-acre North Fork Owens Fire and the 856-acre Snake Fire with 0% containment. The fires are located 6 miles northwest and 6 miles southwest of Ukiah, Oregon respectively.

The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Incident Management Team 3 took command of the fire this morning. Hand crews, engines, water tenders, dozers, and helicopters are being used to suppress the fire. The complex has reached the North Fork John Day Ranger District on the southeast edge of the Snake Fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The ¼-acre Upper Winom Fire located in the Winom Butte Area, 15 miles southeast of Ukiah, Oregon.

The 25-acre Double Snag Fire in the Winom Creek Area, 11 miles southeast of Ukiah, Oregon.

The 15-acre Big Creek Fire located 12 Miles southeast of Ukiah, Oregon.

The 300-acre Monkey Creek Fire in the Thompson Creek Area, 13 miles southeast of Ukiah, Oregon.

Extreme heat and dry conditions are expected to persist throughout the week. Fire officials want to remind everyone that the current fire danger rating remains at EXTREME and public use restrictions involving chainsaw use, smoking and off-road travel are in effect.
