 Salmon Fire and Olive Butte Fire Daily Update July 28, 2026

Total Resources: 27 engines; 21 crews; 22 heavy equipment; 26 water tenders; 3 helicopters; 700 personnel

Fire resources were successful across both fires on Monday with continued mop-up and hot spotting operations.  Crews will continue to look for and extinguish heat sources across both fires and work to reinforce containment lines for the next several days. Contingency groups are working to improve the fire breaks through out fire perimeter. Please be vigilant of increased traffic, including trucks carrying logs. As progress continues, Incident commander Lino Baca wants the members of the community, partners, agency representatives, and cooperators to know we are dedicated to a smooth transition.

Salmon Fire- Size: 1,426 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 60% 

Fire crews are working in the Greenhorn area to assess concerns for structures in the area. Hose and sprinklers are being utilized to provide additional support for any treats to the containment lines. 

Olive Butte Fire- Size: 3,054 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 60%

Crews are working closely with air resources to manage hot spots within the Beaver Meadow area.  In other areas, crews continue to patrol the containment lines for heat sources, and conduct mop-up operations. 

Weather: Although Monday peaked at around 87 degrees, temperatures in the next few days with be closer to seasonal averages with highs in the mid to high 80s. Warm and dry conditions persist as a weak moisture-deficient frontal system pass through the area.

Evacuations: Fire conditions can change rapidly; residents should be prepared for changes in evacuation levels. Stay up to date on changes by visiting the Baker County Sheriff’s Office  Facebook page. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are still working in these areas, so please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads. Closures and Safety: See recent changes to the Salmon and Olive Butte Fire Area Closure and map. The public is asked to avoid the fire closure area for everyone’s safety and to facilitate firefighting efforts. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area.  Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under this TFR. Remember if you fly, we can’t.
