 Salmon Fire and Olive Butte Fire Update

Total Resources: 31 engines; 20 crews; 24 heavy equipment; 28 water tenders; 3 helicopters; 810 personnel

Cause: Undetermined

Last night at 7 PM, the Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed control over the Salmon and Olive Butte fires. Incoming Incident Commander Lino Baca and his team are “committed to continuing the great work done by outgoing Northwest Team 12.” Incident commander Baca further expresses his commitment to “supporting all fire personnel and working with cooperators and partners”. Firefighter resources continue to be shared across the two incidents. Fire crews will continue to reinforce containment lines and conduct mop-up operations along both fire perimeters. Overall, fire activity was down yesterday from the prior days due to smoke cover and slightly lower temperatures.

Infrared flights yesterday showed scattered and isolated heat sources throughout the Salmon Fire perimeter. Crews will continue to look for and extinguish heat sources.

Olive Butte Fire- Size: 3,054 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 60%

Islands of green, unburned areas continue to burn within the interior of the Olive Butte Fire. Crews continue to go direct, where safe to do so, to manage heat sources within and along the fire perimeter. Fire hose lines and sprinklers remain in place to aid firefighters with hot spot management. 

Weather: Temperatures continue to linger in the high 70s to mid-80s, with no precipitation expected in the foreseeable forecast.

Evacuations: Residents should be prepared for changes in evacuation levels as fire conditions can change. Baker County Sheriff’s Office recently reduced evacuation levels for the Granite and Greenhorn communities. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are still working in these areas, so please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads. Closures and Safety: See recent changes to the Salmon and Olive Butte Fire Area Closure and map. The public is asked to avoid the fire closure area for everyone’s safety and to facilitate firefighting efforts. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area. Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under this TFR. Remember if you fly, we can’t.
