The Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) mobilized additional task forces bringing the total number to six. These structural task forces are from Columbia, Clackamas, Clatsop, Lane, Multnomah, and Washington counties and are assigned to protect the 174 structures under threat in Granite, Greenhorn and nearby areas. Firefighters have worked around the clock to clear brush, set up sprinkler systems, and strategically place fire hoses around homes.

Salmon Fire: Size: 1,540 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%

Firefighters successfully strengthened and secured fireline from Vinegar Hill to Psyche Butte. Continuing around the heel, they held the fire along existing road systems and continued constructing and improving dozer line up much of the eastern flank. Fire activity increased in the late afternoon, prompting multiple aircraft to drop retardant and water to keep the fire from spreading eastward into Greenhorn. The fire also grew moderately on the western flank, readily consuming heavy timber in the Salmon Creek drainage. Today, handcrews will be constructing fireline anchoring into ridges to halt the fire spread along the North Fork John Day Wilderness. Crews will continue to attack the fire as directly as possible, progressing up the eastern flank and working to hold the fire along Forest Service Road 508 to prevent fire spread into the communities of Greenhorn and California Gulch. OSFM task forces continue to improve structure protection measures in the Greenhorn Community. Firefighters are working on secondary lines and preparing roads as alternative plans if fire conditions change rapidly. Fire managers are poised for a dynamic fire day with potential for fire growth from unstable weather conditions due to thunderstorms moving into the area as well as possibility for new starts from lightning. Initial attack resources have been identified to respond to any new starts within the immediate fire area.

Olive Butte Fire: Size: 2,411 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%

Dozers completed fireline around the heel of the Olive Fire and continued constructing line northward. These efforts successfully held the fire east of the Olive Creek drainage and halted the fire spread on the southeastern flank where minimal smoke was visible. The fire spread moderately on the northern flank and burned very actively along the upper eastern flank. Firefighters held the fire along dozer lines and roads up the western flank. Today, firefighters are scouting the northern area of the fire for suitable fireline options. Several hotshot crews are working in the Congo Gulch area to protect Fremont Powerhouse. OSFM task forces are continuing to assess and improve structure protection measures around Granite and Olive Creek, reducing overgrown fuels and setting up sprinkler systems.  

Weather and Smoke: Active weather is expected today with showers and thunderstorms expected from early afternoon through sunset. Showers may linger later in the evening. These thunderstorms will not have much precipitation, but will likely have strong, gusty outflow winds. This will be a heads-up situation for firefighters. Evacuations: Residents should be prepared for changes in evacuation levels as fire conditions can rapidly change. Baker County Sheriff’s Office has issued evacuations for the Greenhorn and Granite communities. To sign up for notifications in your area, visit Grant County Everbridge or Baker County Alert.

Closures and Safety: There is Tri-Forest Closure Order in place for the Umatilla, Malheur, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests. The public is asked to avoid the area for everyone’s safety and to facilitate firefighting efforts. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area.
