Cause: Lightning/Natural

Size: 2,425 acres

Containment: 65%

Location: 7 miles NE of Kimberly, OR

Current Situation: Firefighters continue to make progress, having now established containment lines on all sides of the fire. Additional water handling support remains in place, improving access to water along firelines and helping crews address residual heat. Crews are now able to use water on all areas of the fire, including the less accessible area in the north along Happy Jack Ridge. Firefighters, who must hike into that area, now have hose lays in place to fight the fire.

Personnel are also mitigating hazard trees while moving deeper into interior pockets to ensure heat does not compromise established lines. Yesterday, firefighters cleared a substantial patch of hazard trees on the southwest side of the fire. Firefighters remain prepared to support initial attack on any new wildfire in the surrounding area. 

As containment improves, suppression repair work has expanded westward along the southern area of the fire. Crews are rehabbing indirect dozer and hand lines and using chippers to reduce slash and restore disturbed areas. Resource Advisors (READs) are working with Umatilla National Forest staff and operations personnel to guide suppression repair tactics.

Emergency notifications and evacuation updates are coordinated through local Emergency Management. Residents near the fire area are encouraged to stay informed through official fire information.                  

Weather and Fire Behavior: Warm, dry conditions and high fuel loads will continue to support active fire behavior today. Westerly winds will develop through the late morning, shifting to the northwest this afternoon at light speeds, but even with lower wind speeds there remains potential for increased fire activity. Fuels remain highly receptive, and there is still a threat to private property, grazing allotments, and endangered species critical habitat.
