Umatilla National Forest August 12 Fire Update

Multiple fire related temporary area closures are in effect for Umatilla National Forest. Forest Closure descriptions and maps are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/umatilla/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5286768.

With fire conditions improving in some areas, forest officials and fire managers have lifted portions of the temporary closures. Effective today, August 12, Forest Service Lands on North Fork John Day Ranger District east of U.S. Highway 395 and parts of both North Fork John Day and Heppner Ranger Districts north of Forest Service Road 53, west of U.S. Highway 395 have reopened. A map of the adjusted temporary closures is also included with this fire update.

Fire update

All eleven fire starts on Umatilla National Forest lands after the August 5 lightning event have been contained, controlled, or declared as put out. With improved conditions across the forest, this will be the final daily fire update unless new starts are identified.

Walla Walla Ranger District

• The Milk Fire in the Milk Shakes Area, 17 miles southeast of Walla Walla, WA. CONTAINED at 3.6 acres.

Hot and dry conditions are expected to persist, and officials want to remind everyone that the current fire danger

rating is at EXTREME and Public Use Restrictions involving chainsaw use and campfires are in effect.

In addition, the following incidents are burning on or near the Umatilla National Forest and are being managed by partner agencies and Complex Incident Management Teams.
