Salmon Fire and Olive Butte Fire Daily Update August 5, 2026

Total Resources: 26 engines; 10 crews; 15 heavy equipment; 24 water tenders; 447 personnel

As containment increases on both fires, fire personnel are identifying rehabilitation needs and beginning to implement suppression repair. Some of this includes rehabbing hand lines and removing or chipping slash material, branches and other vegetation removed in and around containment lines.

“At this point in the fire, our messaging can feel a little repetitive but make no mistake that the conditions across the northwest right now are prime fire conditions for new starts. We continue to have crews ready to engage any new starts in our area of initial attack,” Incident Commander Lino Baca. 

Salmon Fire- Size: 1,426 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 79% 

While crews begin back-hauling equipment, some equipment (sprinklers, hoses, water holding/storage tanks) will remain in place as a precaution. As residents return to this area, please be mindful of firefighters working in and around properties to continually check this equipment. 

Olive Butte Fire- Size: 3,092 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 75%

Fire crews continue work within containment lines to address hot spots, remove snags and create safe conditions. Once these areas are safe, fire crews will begin mop-up operations. 

Weather: Cooler temperatures Monday night and a slight rise in relative humidity overnight evaporated off and continued to dry through the day Tuesday continuing the dry to very dry conditions. Today will see a warming trend towards above-normal temperatures return as an upper-level ridge intensifies over the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will be in the upper 80s, with light winds. Winds will bring smoke into the area from nearby fires.

Evacuations: Evacuations have been downgraded from GO to SET. Property owners may access property by showing identification at check points. Stay up to date on evacuation orders by visiting the Baker County Sheriff’s Office  Facebook page. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are still working in these areas, please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads.
