NOTE: Daily updates will now be disseminated in the early evening that will reflect fire activity for that day and objectives for the night shift and following day. Please continue to monitor the Elbow Creek Fire Facebook page for timely updates when new information presents itself.
Wallowa, OR – The Elbow Creek fire is estimated around 20,810 acres and remains 20 percent contained. As the fire moves away from structures, Oregon State Fire Marshall (OSFM) task forces and overhead have begun being demobilized.
Approximately 900 personnel remain assigned to the fire.
Firefighting efforts in the northwest section (Elbow and Bear Creek area) continue to be prioritized. The Bear Creek being referred to is NOT the main Bear Creek drainage out of Wallowa. Today aerial resources deployed bucket drops to assist the Rogue-River Interagency Hotshot crew as they constructed hand lines to pinch off the head of the fire. A dozer line is being constructed on the ridgeline above the fire in this section, as well. A large smoke column, visible from the fire area, is occurring due to unburned pockets within the fire perimeter.
The fire has not crossed Sickfoot Creek as crews work diligently to tie in and secure containment lines. Dozer and handlines continue to strengthen. Operations are anticipating a transition to mop-up over the coming days.
Activity on the east side of the fire remains minimal. Crews continue to patrol the area for hot spots, and push mop-up operations further into the fire perimeter.
The Oregon National Guard arrived today, providing more aerial support for firefighting efforts.
Wind patterns were favorable today for firefighting efforts. In the coming days, the forecast calls for warmer and drier conditions. The relative humidity is expected to be in the mid to low teens with minimal recovery at night. These weather conditions have the potential to exacerbate fire activity.
Safety operations continue to work to mitigate COVID-19 related risks. Sanitization and cleaning supplies are being made readily available to all personnel, regardless of camp location.
Several forest closures remain in effect throughout Oregon. Be sure to check current conditions with local offices before visiting state and federal forests.
Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office has reduced evacuation levels as they continue to monitor the fire threat to communities. Level 2 (BE SET) is in effect for the Eden Bench and Promise communities. Level 1 (BE READY) is now in effect for the Troy community. Level 1 evacuation notification for the Flora community has been
lifted. Please refer to the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page for further details regarding evacuations. (www.facebook.com/Wallowa-County-Sheriffs- Office-147212815486187).
