Green Ridge Fire Update July 18, 2021 10 a.m.

Dayton, WA. —The Green Ridge Fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain on the Pomeroy Ranger District, approximately 30 miles east of Walla Walla, Washington. Values at risk include structures, the Mill Creek Watershed, wilderness, and recreation areas in the vicinity.

The Columbia County Sheriff has issued a Level 1 Evacuation Notice for a broad area to the north of the fire. Level 1 means BE READY for potential evacuation. Residents should regularly monitor emergency services websites and local media outlets for information. The notice and map are published on the Inciweb and Facebook sites (see links to the right).

Yesterday firefighters completed structure protection measures on Oregon Butte Lookout. The fire spread north along the ridge between Turkey and Meadow Creeks and east across Turkey Creek to West Butte Ridge.

Today, dozers continue to connect line from the 4610 Road east to the

4713 Road to prevent the fire’s spread to the northwest. Crews are cutting, clearing, and chipping vegetation, and continuing to lay hoses to deliver water for reinforcing indirect fire lines along Kendall Skyline Road and the 4608 Road south and west of the fire. Scouting and line location continues to the east and north to identify features on the landscape, such as trails and unvegetated areas, where indirect fire line will be most likely to contain the fire. Crews will continue improving structure protection around Godman Guard Station and the Little Turkey Tail Recreation Residential tract. Where terrain and fire behavior allow crews to safely

engage, firefighters will directly limit fire spread using helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 3 will assume management of the fire on July 20, 2021 at 0600.

On July 16, 2021, the Umatilla National Forest implemented a Forest-wide closure across the entire Umatilla National Forest. The Forest is closed due to extreme fire danger and multiple fires across the Forest. Additional information about this closure is available on the Forest website.

Fire officials remind everyone that the current fire danger rating is EXTREME and public use restrictions involving chainsaw use, smoking and off-road travel are in effect.
