 Salmon Fire and Olive Butte Fire Daily Update August 2, 2026

Total Resources: 30 engines; 9 crews; 22 heavy equipment; 23 water tenders; 438 personnel

Yesterday’s cold front brought increased winds and increased smoke to the area well into the late hours. The increased smoke may make driving more difficult.  Critically dry conditions across both fire areas, along with the strong shift in winds, are all factors that could promote very active to aggressive fire behavior. Incident Commander Lino Baca, “fire personnel will continue to be available for initial attack response across both fire areas and surrounding communities.” 

Salmon Fire- Size: 1,426 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 72% 

In preparation for the increase in winds and potential for increased fire behavior, fire crews utilized a grid-method to check for heat within the fire perimeter. Sprinklers have been running along the edge of the fire closest to Greenhorn to increase moisture. 

Olive Butte Fire- Size: 3,090 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 64%

Fire crews continue to seek out and extinguish heat sources within the Olive Butte Fire perimeter. A great amount of effort has been put into extending containment lines and reinforcing existing lines.

Weather: Saturday temperatures dropped noticeably from Friday, peaking in the upper 70s to lower 80s. More seasonably cool temperatures are expected today when very dry air comes into the region in the wake of this cold front.

Evacuations: Stay up to date on evacuation orders by visiting the Baker County Sheriff’s Office  Facebook page. Conditions can change quickly. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are still working in these areas, so please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads. To sign up for notifications in your area, visit Grant County Everbridge or Baker County Alert.

Closures and Safety: The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area has been lifted. See recent changes to the Salmon and Olive Butte Fire Area Closure and map. The public is asked to avoid the fire closure area for everyone’s safety and to facilitate firefighting efforts.
